'Overhead the arch of heaven spread more ample than elsewhere, as over the open sea; and that vastness gave, and still gives, such cloudlands, such sunrises, such sunsets, as can be seen nowhere else within these isles.'- Charles Kinsley
The fens do not appeal to everyone and those who prefer mountains and valleys may regard the area as flat and featureless but nowhere in Britain will they find such a peaceful place with stunning views and spectacular and ever-changing skies. For those of us who live in the Parish of Pointon & Sempringham we are indeed blessed to be able to enjoy one of the few places in the world where you have an uninterrupted view for an entire 360 degrees.Be warned however this unique landscape is under threat and unless we act now our beautiful fenlands will be lost forever and the land re-classified from rural to industrial.
AGAST (Action Group Against Sempringham Turbines) is a group of concerned local residents who are opposed to the development of industrial windfarms in the areas of Lincolnshire known as the Fen Margin and the Fens. We currently are opposing ScottishPowers (IBERDROLA Renewable Energies) plans to build a wind farm consisting of six (125 metre high) wind turbines on green belt agricultural land at Neslam Farm, Sempringham Fen. These turbines will be visible up to 20km(13 miles) across our unique farmland landscape.
Wind energy sounds good doesn't it. After all, the wind is free so it's a "green" source of energy which is sustainable. Unfortunately, wind farm developments bring many adverse impacts of their own which are often ignored or even denied. This group is not opposed to the development of "clean" or "renewable" energy and indeed we all need to find ways in which to preserve our ever changing planet. There are however other effective alternatives to fossil fuels that can meet our energy requirements and reduce carbon dioxide emissions such as biomass/bioenergy, Ground source heat pumps, Solar, Landfill methane etc which all deserve the same level of attention that has been placed on wind farms. What we are opposed to is the development of on shore wind farms , particularly in close proximity to rural communities such as ours, because of their inefficiency and their potential impact on the health and quality of life of those living or working nearby. If industrial turbines are to be placed on-shore then communities should be afforded the right level of protection and NO turbine should be placed within 2km of any residential or commercial property.
